4 Tricks for teaching your pet their name
The first thing you thought of before adopting a pet was probably, “What should I call the newest love of my life?” The hard part comes after that. You’re going to have to teach them their names! While it’s true that your pet can learn several human words, including their own name, teaching them to respond to their name has some limitations. Luckily MyFriend has quick and easy tricks to show you!
Here are four quick tricks for teaching your pet their name!
Pick the right name
This is the fun part, where you get to list some names (or THE NAME) you always thought about. Just a reminder that your pet's name should be short, simple, and different from the words we use in our daily lives. Avoid names that sound like training cues, such as “sit”, “stay”, or “stop”, so they won’t get confused!
Use tools and treats!
Who doesn't love a good snack? Positive reinforcement, such as clicking sounds and treats, are the most effective way to teach your pet their name. When your pet isn’t looking, call their name once. And when they look at you, make a clicking sound and immediately give them some treats. This way, they will surely pay attention whenever they hear their name!
No negative feelings
Your puppy or kitten may do something they shouldn't do at times. That might make you annoyed or angry, but try not to be too aggressive! Keep in mind that pets can detect emotion through your voice and facial expressions. If you call their name furiously, they will associate it with negative emotions and will not respond to it again.
Avoid multiple names
You should remember that pets have limitations when it comes to learning human words like their name or learning cues. Avoid using multiple names (and nicknames), so your pet doesn't get confused and can recognize more human words. If you adopt a pet that already has a name, it is totally okay to change it. It might be harder to teach adult pets their new name, but it doesn't hurt to try!

When you come up with a name for your pet, they will remember it; the tone of voice you used and how you treated them. The important thing is that your pet understands that their names have good meaning, and that they do not associate it with other words or negative emotions!
