The idea of having a pet is exciting. Combine that with the magical atmosphere of the holiday season, and the temptation to get a pet to give all of your love & care can be hard to resist! With the busy holiday season here, make sure to consider all the pros and cons before welcoming a new friend.

The idea of having a pet is exciting. Combine that with the magical atmosphere of the holiday season, and the temptation to get a pet to give all of your love & care can be hard to resist!

People who have previously had a fluffy friend will know that adopting a pet is so much more than just providing food, water, and shelter. It’s about providing them emotional support, as well as being there for them when they need you most. Our pets are another valued part of the family! With the busy holiday season here, make sure to consider all the pros and cons before welcoming a new friend.

The joys of adopting a pet during the holidays

This time of the year is all about celebrating. It is about sharing happiness between your friends and family, so adopting a pet can feel like the right move. You can save their lives and provide them with a loving, fur-ever home! It can be fulfilling, knowing that you give a new opportunity to friends that have been neglected.

? Holidays mean more time off from work and daily responsibilities - whatever that might look like for you. This also means that you have more time to get to know your new furry friend! You can rest easy, put your feet up, relax, and enjoy the comforts of your own home. All while creating a strong bond between you and your new friend!

? Adopting a pet during this time can be an additional help in reducing your stress and helping with your relaxation. It can be a break from your stressful lifestyle routine, heavy schedules, and responsibilities.

? A new fur baby can help to strengthen relationships between family members. Taking care of the new member lets you spend more quality time together! Simple things like showing affection or taking them for a walk can help unify the whole family. It could be a little bit difficult for some pets at the beginning, especially if you adopt a senior pet or those who need a little extra tender, love, and care. But if you take good care of them throughout the holidays, they will surely adjust!

? If you have children, having pets in the house can help teach & establish a routine. It’s also a great way to introduce responsibilities into the household. Having pets forces you to develop routine and responsibility toward your pet – such as taking them for a walk, feeding food and water, or bathing them at a scheduled time. It can teach your children the real responsibilities and commitments you must face while taking care of a pet.

What you should know before adopting a pet during the holidays

The holiday seasons are also the time when most people go on their vacation! Home can be a little boring, so spicing things up with a change of scenery is a common activity. There is not enough time for pet parents to create a bond with their pets for those who are likely to travel during the holidays. So, it would be a better idea to adopt a pet when everyone in the family can be home.

? Pets need a daily routine because it helps them with a sense of security. The holidays can be a hectic time where you spend your day celebrating, then the other day decorating, and then the other day visiting your friends or family. So much is going on, and there might be more people going in and out of your home, resulting in chaos! This might be too much for your new pet to handle. Having a daily structure for your pet when they just get into a new home is important. They offer stability, reassurance, trust, and comfort.

? Surprising your friend and family with a pet during the holidays can be very tempting but it is highly not recommended. Soon-to-be pawrents need to form that connection with the pet and consider their readiness to adopt themselves before deciding to adopt them. Giving a pet as a present can result in many pet parents not being able to establish a connection and returning them to a shelter. Here are some surprising statistics about pets during Christmas!

While gifting your loved one with an adorable pet during the holidays can be magical, parenting a pet requires commitment and high responsibility. Research and thoughtful consideration are recommended before welcoming your pet into a new home and if you are not sure you can take full care of them during the holidays, try adopting them after you’ve settled into your normal schedules.

Félicette: World’s first CATstronaut

Félicette, a street cat found roaming the streets of Paris was the first chosen feline to tackle an unthinkable task.

The international space race was a competitive event that took the world by storm! A simple but daunting task between two rival countries: The Soviet Union and The United States, to see who would be the first to conquer space exploration!.

A Russian street dog named Laika was actually the first animal to explore the vast space in 1957, followed by an American chimp named Ham who went into the empty wilderness in 1961. Although less commonly known, the French also launched a feline friend into space in the name of science. ?‍?

History and Background

Félicette, a street cat found roaming the streets of Paris was the first chosen feline to tackle an unthinkable task. Along with 13 other street cats, French scientists put these kitties to the test. Through several months of research, screening tests, and training, the cats had electrodes connected to their brains and went through confinement, loud noises, and even centrifuge sessions to prepare them for the big leap! ?

Why did France do it?

The reason why Félicette was chosen is because of her calm personality. Unlike the rest, she did not panic during the trials. This was extremely important because the researchers’ aim was to examine the effects of space travel on human physiology.

At the time, cats were commonly used in the field of neurophysiology because they actually share many cellular functions with us, which also means we can study them to get a better understanding of our own biology!

On a breezy autumn day in 1963, Félicette spent 15 minutes on a voyage to the stars before coming back down to earth.

Common misconceptions and the forgotten feline

As the main competitors were the Soviet Union and the United States, France fell behind and was forgotten. At the time, they never launched a human into space, so their accomplishments were forgotten, as well as Félicette’s contributions. But that’s just history – now, France has one of the biggest space agencies in the world!

Actually, there were a series of stamps that appeared to honor her contributions – but they made a mistake with her name and sex! She appeared as a male cat named Félix.

Memorial

After the mix-up, a man named Matthew Serge Guy actually organized a kickstarter campaign. He stated that

“Although other animals in space — such as Laika the dog and Ham the chimpanzee — are well-known within popular culture and have lasting memorials, very few people are aware that a cat went to space at all. Now, it’s time for ‘The Astrocat’ to get the memorial she rightly deserves.”

Guy’s campaign gained over $57,000 to create a statue for Félicette, which now stands proudly at the International Space University in France.

Ethical concerns and considerations

Of course, we have to address the elephant in the room. Despite the great contribution that Félicette has given the scientific community, the ethical aspect of using animals in experiments remains controversial. Animals can’t speak for themselves, so there’s a pretty good chance Félicette didn’t consent to any of this. But back in 1963, we still weren’t too sure about the effects of space travel on human neurological impacts.

As a society, we’ve learned from our mistakes, and according to an article on NASA's own website from 2004,

"Animal housing rules are more extensive than the requirements for human children daycare centers. NASA facilities that house animals for research are accredited by an organization that requires proof that animals are cared for in a facility that meets those standards."

Tradition or Torture: Thailand’s risky rain-asking rituals

In Thailand, the rainmaking ritual is called “Hae Nang Maew” (แห่นางแมว) - which translates to Cat Parade. Don’t be fooled by the cute name, as the tradition has a few concerning and questionable practices.

Rainmaking rituals have been an integral part of several cultures, especially agrarian societies. The ritual’s main purpose is in the name: to ask for rain. As precipitation plays an essential role in crop cultivation, Thai farmers believe that natural showers are a gift from deities. In moments of drought, doubt and worry are planted. With no rain, crops die out, and the soil dries out, leaving farmers with little to nothing.

In Thailand, the rainmaking ritual is called “Hae Nang Maew” (แห่นางแมว) - which translates to Cat Parade. Don’t be fooled by the cute name, as the tradition has a few concerning and questionable practices.

Tradition origin, and practices

In ancient times, Thais believed that cats are mythical creatures with supernatural powers. These sacred powers also come with the ability to call for rain. As cats and water don’t usually mix, every time there is rain, our feline friends will cry out. These cries are requests that will reach the heavens, where a male deity resides, and he will send the rain down.

Here’s the troubling part: The Cat Parade begins with villagers placing female cats (one to three) into a basket. The basket is then carried with sticks, where the villagers will start to parade the cat from house to house. As this is happening, there are chants and songs being recited by the crowd. Those in each house that is passed, must present some offerings, like liquor, rice, eggs, dessert, or money, and splash water into the cage the cats are in. If the owner of the house refuses, it’s believed that bad luck will be drawn upon the family. The ceremony will take up the whole day under the sun. If there is no rain as a result, the process will be repeated until there is rain.

Thai laws and regulations

There is a continuous attempt to strengthen animal welfare. Animal cruelty is prohibited in Section 20 of the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act, 2014.

As referenced from Animal Protection Index, Animal Cruelty in Thailand is defined as:
“an act or a failure to act which causes an animal to suffer, physically or mentally, or causes an animal to suffer from pain, illness, infirm, or may cause death to such animal…”

It should also be mentioned that the definition of “animal” is inclusive of any living animal. Regardless of the presence or absence of an owner, that means all friends are protected by the law!

We’re doing better!

Because of stricter laws and regulations, these rainmaking practices are slowly fading away. In the past, there have been feline friends who have suffered from these traditions and had to cross the rainbow bridge prematurely.

Thai style creativity has always been something we can all appreciate. There have been several reports of villagers using teddy bears, stuffed cat animals, and even clay figurines instead of a cat in order to continue the ritual!

It's been said that the purpose of the Cat Parade is to bring villagers together. We believe that traditions and cultural practices should be preserved. But when we’re harming or hurting another life in the process, we should adapt and find other ways to continue the tradition in a sustainable manner.

Werewolf Legends: True Story or Rabies?!

Werewolves are mythical creatures that first originated during the European middle ages. What are the origins of this myth? Are there any scientific explanations? Let’s welcome the spookiest month of the year by finding out the truth today with MyFriend!

Werewolves are mythical creatures that first originated during the European middle ages. As the legend goes, a mad dog’s bite can turn normal people into raging beasts of the night, hunting for prey, leaving no one behind. What are the origins of this myth? Are there any scientific explanations? Let’s welcome the spookiest month of the year by finding out the truth today with MyFriend!

The Werewolf lore is about people who turn into powerful and wild wolves, typically during nights when there is a full moon. It’s been said that the person's character and behavior change drastically, suddenly possessing heightened senses, and becoming vicious. They hunt for their prey or decaying corpses to feed on, before returning to their “normal” human state in the morning.

Curiosity sparked from the extreme lore of transforming from a normal human to a wild werewolf, within one historian in particular! Once there were technological advancements in the medical field, and there were finally reliable sources of historical records, Eugen Weber revealed the truth! During the 19th century, villagers in France were afraid of “canine madness” – which is what they used to describe Rabies!

Rabies happens when the body is infected with a deadly virus from being bitten or scratched by a rabid animal. The virus will travel to the central nervous system, and it has an incubation period of around 2-8 weeks.

The initial symptoms are mild fever, sore throat, loss of appetite, fatigue, and itchiness around the infected area. Once the initial symptoms subside, neurological dysfunction will start to occur. This includes anxiety, confusion, agitation, light sensitivity, aggression, and hallucinations.

Dogs are responsible for over 99% of cases of rabies infection in people. Despite this, rabies can be transmitted through other mammals too, such as cats, rats, and rabbits.

Currently, there are no effective treatments available for the disease, but it is preventable! Taking animals to get their rabies vaccination, and being careful with getting bitten is the best method to avoid contracting this virus. But if you’re already bitten, immediately contact your physician to receive further aid, and shots for rabies and tetanus.

If you come across any animal that is exhibiting behaviors related to rabies, such as agitation, excitement, or chasing other animals and people, call the Local Health Service Center so they can take further action. Do not try to catch them yourselves. Check if they are showing the following behaviors

As referenced by the BBC Thai news agency and Thai Red Cross Society, there are two types of symptoms animals with rabies can exhibit.

Although the modern-day explanation brings more sense to legends and folklore, the werewolf myth remains a classic in our hearts. Especially during full-moon lit nights, many of us can’t help but look up and wonder. Are the howling dogs talking to someone transforming into one of them?! ??

Improve your pet’s life with wearable technology!

Even though these wearable devices are not medical equipment, they’re extremely useful as a tracking tool for our health.

In a world where technology is always advancing, little gadgets have become a staple in our lives. Wearable devices or wearable technology is an electronic device that is able to connect to the internet! The main function is the convenience it brings us when it comes to communication. It’s also a place where we track and store our health data, whether it would be our heart rate, steps of the day, or calories burned. The user can wear this all the time - to the point where they feel naked without one!

Even though these wearable devices are not medical equipment, they’re extremely useful as a tracking tool for our health. We can use this data to check in and take better care of ourselves. Which is why these have started to evolve into wearable tech for pets! That way, we can monitor their health, and give them a healthy life.

Dirk van der Liden, is a Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University who studies wearable technology for pets. He believes that this can help us give better care for our furry companions. It could be tracking their daily activities, the distance they’ve walked, and more! In an interview with GlobalPETS, he stated that “There is a potential for objective sensor data, with appropriate validated algorithms and interpretation, which can be translated into clear instructions about what our pets need.”

The data that all pawrents can get from these wearable devices for pets can help us be more careful about exercise for our best friends. Avoiding the expensive cost of pet obesity, and the toll it can have on our pets. Another added benefit is that, if our pets ever go missing, we can track these devices and locate them! Veterinarians will definitely love the insight these tools can give them. Since it gives accurate data, convenience, and a real glimpse into the little one’s health.. Televet or Veterinary Telemedicine, which is when we consult with a vet through an online platform, will definitely reap the benefits of wearable technology.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us of the importance of our health, and our pets' wellbeing. As a result, these nifty gadgets have skyrocketed in popularity! In South Korea, there were over 19% of pets who had wearable gadgets - compared to the whole pet population! There’s a high chance that the popularity will only continue to rise, with all pet lovers around the globe.

These devices cannot replace professional medical equipment, and their safety is still something we shouldn’t forget about. Data is valuable and the question of internet safety it’s still up for debate. Nevertheless, wearable technology can serve as a useful tool for tracking your pets daily activities and overall health. It's a great start to becoming a responsible pawrent! You can also track your fluffy friends’ health data via a designed application to look after your pets! ?

Dealing with the pain of losing your pet

Many pet parents find themselves resisting the need to feel grief after losing a beloved pet. Whether it’s from shame, fear, or the misconception that losing a pet is an insignificant matter.

Many pet parents find themselves resisting the need to feel grief after losing a beloved pet. Whether it’s from shame, fear, or the misconception that losing a pet is an insignificant matter. Grief is not easy. Oftentimes, it’s terribly difficult and painful…the loss of a pet can hurt as much as losing a relative.

A study from the Journal of Society & Animals published in 2002 found that the loss of a beloved pet can be as devastating as the loss of a human significant other. Loss, sadness, and grief has a direct effect on one's mental health. Grief is not linear, it doesn’t have a timeline, and everyone deals with it differently. Because of this, it is crucial that all of us understand different ways to cope and our own healing processes.

The book On Death & Dying by Elizabeth Kübler-Ross explained that there are five stages of grief. The stages of grief identified are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and lastly, acceptance. Since grief is unique to the individual, these stages are not always in order. A person might experience anger before denial, another might go through bargaining after depression, it’s all subjective.

Denial is typically experienced immediately after a loss. In an attempt to protect us from the pain, our brain gives us time and space to adjust. Denial is a defense mechanism that tries to minimize our pain.

Anger stems from all the unanswered questions why this has happened. By trying to understand and control the situation, anger acts as temporary control for us.

Bargaining gives us false hope in our moments of vulnerability. Motivated by the belief that we could’ve done something better, or we should've spent more time with them. In situations where we have no control over, we tend to bargain to try and understand, or control the situation.

Depression usually is the longest stage for many. After losing a beloved pet, the place they have in our hearts can feel like an empty void. For some pet parents, no matter how long it has been, they will always hold a small amount of sadness in their hearts for their pets who’ve crossed the rainbow bridge.

Acceptance is the last stage of grief. After allowing ourselves to feel and process each emotion fully, we can start moving forward with other positive coping mechanisms. Accepting the loss does not mean forgetting all the beautiful memories. Grieving is not a linear process, even after acceptance, we might find ourselves in earlier stages of grief. After this stage, looking for a new companion is not something we should feel guilty of.

It’s never easy losing someone we love dearly, and it’s important we recognise that each individual deals with loss differently. MyFriend wants to support everyone who has lost their beloved pets. Feeling your emotions and allowing yourself to embrace them is a crucial part of the healing journey. Don’t forget that your mental health should always be a priority.

Accept but never forget

The process of moving on after losing a friend doesn’t mean forgetting them. It only means we are storing their memories in a place of bittersweet longing. Creating a memorial keepsake like a framed photo, toys with paw prints, or other items that can help us reminisce to the happy times we shared with our friends.

Fight Climate Change with Cat Litter: Zeolite from cat litter can reduce Methane in the air

According to MIT experts, adding copper to zeolite makes this new chemical capable of converting methane to carbon dioxide.

We know that climate change resulted from human activities, which created global warming. Yet we continue to promote activities such as industrial plants, transportation, livestock, and more activities that emit greenhouse gasses (GHG) that absorb infrared radiation. These gasses raise the average temperature of the atmosphere.

Although we are aware of the global warming situation, we are still trying to figure out how to slow it down. Now, we are one step closer to our goal. There is a discovery that ‘zeolite’, a common substance used in making cat litter, can help reduce methane in the air!

According to MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) experts, adding copper to zeolite makes this new chemical capable of converting methane to carbon dioxide. The procedure "illustrates the possibilities of employing low-cost, earth-abundant materials to attenuate methane and slow the pace of climate change," according to the research paper.

Even though carbon dioxide is the most well-known greenhouse gas, methane can absorb 30 times more infrared radiation than carbon dioxide. It has a significant impact on our planet.

Due to the enormous volume of methane released by the fossil fuel industry and livestock, the next challenge for MIT scientists and engineers is to design a machine or equipment that can transform methane into carbon dioxide before it enters the environment.

Let's stand by all the researchers and help save our planet from global warming with our own hands and paws! ??

How our furry friends might impact planet Earth

Pets have always been by our sides for hundreds of years, offering us hoomans pure unconditional love and support.

Pets have always been by our sides for hundreds of years, offering us hoomans pure unconditional love and support. Can you imagine though, that something as pure as our beloved pets can also cause impacts on the environment, just like humans do?!

59% of the Asian population have pets in their household. Giving them love and affection happens naturally, especially when they’re more like a member of our family, rather than an animal. If we could, we’d love to provide the best of the best for our lovable pets. Whether it be high-grade premium food, new must have toys, or cool outfits for our little fashionistas. But these mentioned items might cause an impact on the environment in the way you’d never expect.

Professor Gregory Okin, a geography professor at the University of California told us that meat-eating by dogs and cats create 64 million tons of carbon dioxide a year. It has the same climate impact as a year’s worth of 13.6 million cars driven. It also supports the fact that industrial meat production causes the most greenhouse gasses or around 18% of our atmosphere.

Eating is of course necessary, but the consequence of that is excretion (which is also absolutely necessary). Pets’ feces mostly ends up in a landfill. Dogs' and cats' poop contains bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can transfer diseases to humans and to nature for years. Cat litter clumps are not disposable. A yearly use of doggie poop bags are at least 700 bags (Estimated two poop bags per dog per day).

It’s definitely impossible for us pet lovers to stop caring for our beloved pet babies. What we can do, however, is to look after our pets and take care of them in a way that’s more environmentally friendly for our earth. Let’s take a look at what we can do!

Food Adjustment ?

Look for alternative food or treats that your pets can still enjoy, that are friendly for the environment. Whether it’s adding fruits and vegetables to your dog's food or consider giving them insect-based protein that has a more environmentally friendly effect on the planet. Please do keep in mind that all pets require a complete and balanced diet!

Deal with waste ?

The most important thing is not to flush dogs' poop or cat litter because it can contaminate the water resources. What you should do is keep their waste in disposable bags and dump it in waste-only trash, so it will not mix in with other types of trash.

Toys and accessories ?

Having some toys is always good for our pets' physical and mental health! We might not need to purchase new items on every single special occasion though!. Replace new toys by showing your fur babies love in a different way. Spending more time with your pets, taking them outside to explore and get some exercise, that will make them so over the moon happy!
