If you’ve ever had a yakult or yogurt, you’ve probably heard about probiotics before. Dietary supplements are a highly debated topic, and there’s definitely mixed feelings out there. Too much of anything can be harmful! Especially for our pets. Do we really need to give them supplements? When exactly does your pet need probiotics, if at all?

What are Probiotics?

We usually think of bacteria as a bad thing, but there’s both good and bad bacteria. Probiotics are the good kind! Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that help with digestion. They also help us with fighting bad bacteria, and keeping everything in our gut biome balanced.

How do I know if my pet needs it?

Stress, diet changes, parasites, or certain medications (like antibiotics) can reduce the amount of good bacteria in your pup's gut. Reduced good bacteria could potentially lead to digestive problems, or even irritability.

? Inconsistent Bathroom Time is a telltale sign that your pet’s digestive system needs a little tender love and care! This can range from constipation, diarrhea, or frequent changes in stool consistency.

? Smelly Toots can be a sign of allergies or even food intolerances. If your dog’s farts are making people leave the room, consider consulting with the veterinarian for a little check up on their digestive system.

? Kibble or eating dry food as a part of their daily routine might mean they need a probiotic. There’s a huge amount of carbohydrates in those little pellets. Cats and Dogs in particular need help breaking down and balancing their gut biome.

? Yeasty Problems in your pet are also another sign they need probiotics. It can be problematic when there is too much yeast in your pet’s system. Frequent yeast infections in the skin or ears could originate in the gut.

? Anxiety and other behavioral changes can be a result of an imbalanced gut. Almost as much as 70% of serotonin is made in the gut biome! An imbalanced gut can cause your furry friend to feel a little under the weather.

? Immune System can be supported by giving your pet probiotics. There are millions of live bacteria in our furry friends' gut. Probiotics can help them fight off infections and strengthen their whole immune system.

We all want our best friends to be healthy and happy. Giving them probiotics can help their digestive system, and improve their overall health. But before you give your trusted companion probiotics, we recommend talking to your veterinarian. Book a consultation to discuss your pets individual and specific dietary needs.
